Canada was represented on the platform at Gettysburg when Abraham Lincoln delivered what is probably the most famous speech in American history, the Gettysburg Address, in November of 1863. Father of Confederation William MacDougall sat behind Lincoln at the President's invitation and it is believed that MacDougall travelled to the battlefield from Washington with Lincoln.
