Macdonald is instrumental in founding the St. Andrews Society at Kingston in 1840, and serves as its first president. According to an account of the evening of his election “the pipers of the lodge, the brethern in kilts with John A. at their head, also in Highland costume, proceeded up Princess Street to his residence... They were met at the door by his mother, who, when the piper stood before her, descended the steps and snapping her fingers, gave the time for an eight-hand Scotch reel...” According to Macdonald biographer E. B. Beggar, John A. played the bagpipes.
