In June of 1843, less than a month after his death, the first and last sermons of Reverend Robert David Cartwright of St. George's Church were published as The First and Last Words of a Pastor to His People." In the preface, written by his wife Harriet Dobbs Cartwright, the pair of sermons are refered to as "a parting gift." In his first sermon as the Assistant Minister of St. George's Chruch, on March 20, 1831, Cartwright states that "I confess I think of myself happy that my lot is likely to be cast in a place endeared to me by the ties of early recollections, and among so many who have known me from you youth up."
