On May 23, 1873, Queen Victoria, acting on the advice of Sir John A., approved the act to establish the North-West Mounted Police, later to become the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, one of the most iconic of all Canadian institutions. The police force was needed to bring law and order to, assert sovereignty over and stop the free flow of American whiskey into the Northwest Territories. Its presence was necessary if a railroad was to encourage settlers to the West.
