Helen Macdonald died on October 24, 1862 and was buried in the Cataraqui Cemetery. John A., who had an exceptionally close relationship with his mother, set off immediately after her funeral for England, where he remained until February 1863. Upon his return he banded up with Liberal turned Conservative, D'Arcy McGee. The pair drank the nights away, often ending their nights singing rowdy songs including "A drunken man is a terrible curse. But a drunken women is twice as worse."
