Whatever political power base resides at Grimason House is seriously eroded with Macdonald's 1878 defeat at the hands of the Kingston voters. In the decade before he regains the Kingston riding, Sir John A. helps establish the Conservative-based Albany Club in Toronto. He becomes its first honorary president in 1889. In hindsight, perhaps it was the feared loss of patronage that caused Eliza to be "cryin' til I didn't have an eye in me head" upon learning Sir John A.'s defeat in Kingston.
