On June 11, the day of the funeral, the horse-drawn hearse proceeded to Cataraqui Cemetery along streets lined with mourners from across Ontario and Quebec, and Kingston expressed its mourning by tolling church bells and flying flags at half-mast on public buildings and ships in the harbour. As requested by Macdonald, he was buried near to his mother, Helen Macdonald. Other recognitions were a requiem service at Westminster Abbey and the elevation of Lady Macdonald to the peerage. On October 23, 1895, the city erected a memorial statue to Sir John A. Macdonald in City Park. A memorial plaque marks his grave at Cataraqui Cemetery, and a memorial service organised by the Kingston Historical Society is held there every June 6.
