Sir John A. & Queen's University

December 18 1839 - October 16, 1841

On Dec. 18, 1839, the day after the bill was introduced to the Legislature for the establishment of a Presbyterian college to train ministers, a meeting was held in St. Andrew's Church to initiate a campaign to raise funds for this project. Three young men were present, all of whom would later be knighted: Alexander Campbell, Oliver Mowat, and John A. Macdonald. The then 24 year-old Macdonald moved or seconded four of the eight resolutions but claimed later that he was too shy to deliver the speech he had prepared. Queen's University was established by Royal Charter on October 16, 1841.
