Louis Riel led two resistance movements against the government of Canada while Sir John A. was prime minister. After the Red River Resistance, Riel was forced into exile because of his role in the execution of Orangeman Thomas Scott. While in exile, however, Riel was elected to the Canadian House of Commons. The Métis leader is often framed in opposition to John A. Macdonald in Canadian confederation/nationalism narratives.
