Her Majesty Queen Victoria reigned during the entire period Sir John A. served as Prime Minister. She knighted the Dominion's first Prime Minister in 1867. Until recently her reign was the longest in British and Canadian history. On Sept. 9, 2015, our current monarch, Queen Elizabeth, surpassed her relative's record. Canadians in Sir John A.'s time felt a particularly close attachment to Queen Victoria and Imperial Britain.
