The four British military fortifications called Martello Towers that still "guard" Kingston today, were constructed in 19th century Kingston. It is interesting to note that a future Prime Minister of Canada, stone-mason Alexander Mackenzie, worked on some of these fortifications which are now part of a UNESCO World Heritage site.
