In 1885, following the emigration of the Métis to Saskatchewan and the ongoing encroachment of settlers, the Métis continued to petition Macdonald's government for their land rights. As in 1869, the Métis and Louis Riel formed a provisional government. However, unlike 1869, Macdonald met the uprising with violence rather than with negotiations. Macdonald ordered the newly formed North-West Mounted Police to quell the uprising.
