During John A.'s early years, his entire community of Kingston was – briefly – the centre of an exciting colonial moment. In 1841 Kingston was made the capital city of the United Provinces of Canada with parliamentarians like Baldwin and Lafontaine meeting at what is now Kingston General Hospital. Kingston's status as a capital city was short-lived, with the capital being moved to Montreal in 1844.
