In 1843, Macdonald travels to England, in part to regain his health and clear his mind from recent events including the death of his father. The trip is financed entirely with winnings from a game of cards: "In 1842, a lot of us sat down to play cards ... We played loo, and I won everything ... nearly two thousand dollars in all." In today's money his winnings would amount to more than $20,000. Years later Macdonald comments that he "had six months holiday on that money, and never played for money since."
