On February 16, 1867, John A. married Susan Agnes Bernard, a Jamaican-born English woman, 21 years his junior, at St. George's Church in London's Hanover Square. They had first met in 1856, at the Rossin House Hotel in Toronto. Their wedding was a pretty one, with rays of winter sunlight streaming in through the stained-glass windows of St. George's Church in fashionable Mayfair. Agnes wore white. John A. gave a charming speech in which he mused on the theme of union. The 90 guests in attendance were treated to a sumptuous wedding breakfast at the Westminster Palace Hotel. The happy couple left immediately for a short honeymoon in Oxford.
