In 1844, Macdonald is elected to represent Kingston in the parliament of the Province of Canada. His first petition to the assembly calls for an increase in salary for Henry Smith Sr., warden of Kingston Penitentiary. Smith's son is a close personal friend of Macdonald. Several years later a review headed by The Globe editor George Brown discloses corruption, mismanagement and brutal treatment of inmates as young as eight. Warden Smith is fired.
