John A.'s fortunes greatly improve when, in June 1839, he becomes a director of the Commercial Bank of the Midland District. His father Hugh, after failing at several business ventures, had, through family connections, become a clerk at the bank three years earlier. In the autumn of 1839, Macdonald is appointed as the Commercial Bank's legal advisor. As noted by biographer Ged Martin: “At the age of 24, John A. Macdonald could now shift his focus away from fee-grubbing courtroom work towards the attractive world of business and corporate law. He was no longer ‘poor and friendless.'”
