A long-time confidant and drinking companion of John A. is Montreal lawyer and businessman John Rose. During a particularly trying period of his wife's illness, Macdonald and Rose go bar-hopping in the United States. As later described by Britain's Lord Carnavon, they "went into the States and wandered about as strolling musicians. Macdonald played some rude instrument, Rose enacted the part of a bear and danced ... To the great amusement of themselves and everyone else, they collected pence by their performances in wayside taverns."
