In 1875, at the height of John A. and his son's disputes and at a time when conversations between them frequently turned into screaming matches, Hugh John married Jean King despite his father's refusal to bless the union. In the end, John A. attended the wedding though by all accounts he was silent for most of the day. By the end of 1875, Hugh John had made the decision to leave the family law firm. Toward the end of 1876, following the death of Margaret Macdonald, the two reconciled and Hugh John rejoined the family law firm though relations between John A. and Jean were not pleasant until after the birth of Jean and Hugh John's daughter in 1877.
