Despite the fact that they are intimate political allies, for close to two years Macdonald and Tupper rarely speak to each other. They fall out over Tupper's insistence that Macdonald send government business, during the opening up of western Canada, to their sons' Winnipeg law firm. When Tupper becomes insistent, Macdonald replies that he'll not have a gun put to his head, not even by one as close to him as Tupper.
