As premier of Nova Scotia, Charles Tupper leads the reluctant province into Confederation in 1867, then goes on to have a long and complicated relationship with Macdonald. The two fight seven federal elections together; their sons Hugh John Macdonald and James Stewart Tupper set up a law practice in Winnipeg; and Tupper's daughter, Emma, serves as a bridesmaid at Macdonald's London marriage to Agnes Bernard in 1867.
