According to biographer Richard Gwyn, Macdonald and Henry Smith Jr. are so close that "Macdonald asked Smith to intervene for him in an 'affair of honour' arising from a nasty exchange in the House with an opposing member – an episode that could have led to a duel." Their friendship becomes strained when Smith supports "representation by population," a reform ideal strongly opposed by Macdonald. Smith runs unsuccessfully against the Conservatives in 1861 and 1863. Following Confederation in 1867, he's elected to the Ontario legislature, as a Conservative, but dies less than a year later.
