Henry Smith Jr. is an immigrant from England and three years older than John A. Macdonald. Kingston lawyers who sometimes work together on cases, they become close friends and help establish the Cataraqui Club “for the discussion ... of the various subjects which ought to interest society.” In 1843 he became the lawyer for the Grand Trunk Railway in Kingston. As elected members for the Province of Canada, they are political allies and then opponents. He is knighted by the Prince of Wales on his royal visit to Canada in 1860.
