After the death of Cartier in the 1870s, Hector Langevin worked his hardest to fill the shoes of his fallen friend as Sir John A.'s leading partner in French Canada. Most agree, however, that Cartier was irreplaceable. Still, Langevin did his best. It fell to him, in June of 1891, to pay tribute to the fallen Macdonald on behalf of their party in the Commons. Again, he faced an impossible task as the eloquent Wilfrid Laurier spoke after him and Laurier's tribute has gone down in history, not Langevin's.
