Harriet Dobbs Cartwright came to Kingston from Ireland in 1833 with her new husband, Robert David Cartwright. As a well-off woman, Cartwright joined the Female Benevolent Society and made it her work to help and advocate for Kingston’s poor. Between organizing fundraisers and chairing positions, Cartwright worked on the front lines of the Society, interviewing poor families, finding employers, and visiting women in prison. Cartwright also produced drawings of Kingston which are valuable as early views of the city. She died in 1887.
