In 1885, Gabriel Dumont served as Louis Riel's chief military officer as Riel attempted to seek justice from the Macdonald government – or, depending on your point of view, led a rebellion. His leadership became legendary among the Métis people and beyond with even John Diefenbaker, the 13th Prime Minister, who grew up in Saskatchewan, writing about Riel's military commander in his own memoirs, One Canada.
