On April 7, 1868, John A.'s trusted colleague, drinking partner and old friend D'Arcy McGee was murdered. McGee had been at the parliamentary debates until well after midnight. At 2 a.m. McGee was outside his boarding house on Sparks Street, Ottawa, waiting to be let in, when he was shot by Patrick J. Whelan. A state funeral was held in Ottawa for McGee and 80,000 turned out for a procession in Montreal where McGee was interred. Patrick Whelan, said to be a Fenian sympathizer, was convicted and hanged in Ottawa the following year.
