A year after Alexander Campbell's bitter disolution of his partnership with Macdonald he is elected to Kingston City Council to represent Victoria Ward. He holds the Council position for two years. In 1858 and again in 1864, he's elected to the provincial Legislative Council and is a delegate to the 1864 Confederation Conferences in Charlottetown and Quebec. This means that three Fathers of Confederation worked together in the small law office operated by Sir John in downtown Kingston.
