Although the federal government apologized for their involvement in the development of residential schools in 2008, there remains little ongoing effort from the government in supporting survivors and their descendants. Soon after the apology, Prime Minister Harper denied Canada’s history of colonialism in a speech at the G20 Summit in 2009. His statement effectively reversed the earlier apology, as it denied the assimilationist strategies of the Canadian government as a function of colonialism.
