Life is anything but easy for John A., his family and any resident of Kingston (or anywhere else) in the 19th century when it comes to health. Diseases, including smallpox, that we have eradicated today thanks to immunization and other facets of modern science, were rampant. One only need to visit a graveyard and read the ages of the many children who died from these diseases to see the harsh realities of 19th century life.
